URBAM FARMS

Turning unused land into gardens where families can strengthen their community.

Farming Done in Your City

In 2015 BWC established Urban Farms to protect and restore vulnerable, undeveloped land and to increase food sovereignty in the city of Brownsville by teaching families to farm and increase the amount of locally grown food.

Urban Farm participants spend about one year learning to farm through this program. Participants are provided hands-on training, equipment, tools, compost bins, work tables, and greenhouses so that they can create their own organic transplants and seeds. Rain harvest equipment and irrigation system are also made available.

Our urban farms produce an abundance of organically grown fruits and vegetables to use in our cooking classes and sell at the Brownsville Farmers' Market, FRESCO Mobile Market and to local restaurants.
